MediaMarkt Saturn removed Ledger hardware wallets from its shelves and website starting October 13. The move followed a report from a German customer who discovered an unauthorized implant inside a newly purchased device.
The tampering was limited to units supplied through Southeast Asian reseller CryptoBilis. The hidden module reads the 24-word recovery phrase from the screen and transmits it via an LTE eSIM. The secure element and transaction signing remain untouched.
On-chain analysts put total losses linked to these devices at roughly $93 million. Former Mt. Gox CEO Mark Karpelès had already flagged a similar find on October 9 with a unit shipped from Malaysia.
Ledger says its direct sales channels are unaffected and advises against using any wallets bought via CryptoBilis. Users who already set one up should move funds to a fresh device with a new seed phrase.
