Stanford PhD Turns Satoshi’s Unused 2008 Poker Buttons Into Working Bitcoin Game

Hidden inside Bitcoin’s earliest code from April 2008 were interface elements for dealing hands and placing bets. Satoshi never activated them, leaving the feature as an unfinished sketch for nearly two decades.

Robin Linus picked up the thread and released a working protocol that lets two people play limit Texas Hold’em directly on Bitcoin. The network itself handles card distribution, betting and dispute resolution.

Only nine cards are created per hand through joint cryptographic commitments. The process succeeds on the second attempt on average because duplicate checks reject roughly half of the initial draws.

Before any chips move, players pre-sign Bitcoin transactions covering every possible outcome. This setup removes the need for trust or a central operator.
