On October 8 a 63-year-old woman from Allen County got her $15,300 back. State investigators traced and froze the funds after she fell for a crypto ATM fraud.
The scam started with a fake pop-up claiming her computer was hacked. She was directed to a bogus Microsoft support line, told to withdraw cash, convert it to cryptocurrency and send it through an ATM.
The FBI passed the case to Ohio’s BCI unit, which has handled 309 similar investigations since 2024 involving $5.6 million in losses. Average victim loss stands at $18,767.
Attorney General Andy Wilson urged new state rules to force refunds and shield seniors, who remain the main targets of these schemes.
