Russia May Exclude USDT from Retail Trading Under 2027 Rules

20.09.2026 · Cryptonews

Starting July 2027, Russia will require all crypto transactions to go through licensed local intermediaries. The central bank has suggested limiting retail access to just three coins: bitcoin, ether and USDT.

Lawmakers in the State Duma are pushing back against USDT. They cite Tether’s history of freezing tokens when ordered by US authorities, arguing this could expose Russian users to sudden blocks.

Analysts say the real risk lies in the transaction history of each token. Coins that touched sanctioned exchanges, mixers or high-risk P2P counterparties face higher chances of being flagged.

Keeping USDT in a personal non-custodial wallet bought on a foreign platform remains low-risk for now. After mid-2027, however, any conversion into rubles will need to pass through approved Russian channels and may require proof of origin for larger amounts.
