Ethereum researcher Justin Drake took to X on Wednesday urging the crypto sector to adopt a defensive stance. Recent mathematical breakthroughs by OpenAI, he argued, suggest that the ECDSA signature scheme protecting most wallets might fall far sooner than the long-anticipated quantum threat.
Drake pointed to OpenAI’s release of hundreds of new math proofs on Tuesday and its earlier feat of solving the Navier-Stokes equation in 88 hours using 10,000 autonomous AI agents. He noted that elliptic curves contain exploitable algebraic structure that hash functions deliberately avoid.
His practical advice is a gradual, controlled shift of holdings to fresh addresses. Large, technically sophisticated holders should move first, and any remaining balance should be transferred to a new address immediately after signing a transaction.
