On July 16 Celo Core Co. rolled out its x402 service, giving AI agents the ability to pay directly in local currencies instead of routing everything through dollar-pegged stablecoins. The first tokens live are wARS, wBRL and wCOP from Ripio, covering Argentine pesos, Brazilian reals and Colombian pesos.
Users who let agents handle spending no longer face unnecessary FX swings, while merchants and API providers can invoice in the same currency their customers actually use.
The wFIAT tokens are issued by Ripio and backed by several Latin American currencies. Celo already supports 20 currencies and 33 stablecoins, with wMXN, wCLP and wPEN next in line. Since mainnet launch in 2020 the network has processed more than 1.4 billion transactions.
