Bitcoin and Ether posted unexpected gains in September, a month that has historically been tough for crypto. Bitcoin rose 6.5% while Ether gained nearly 9%, extending Bitcoin’s positive streak that started in 2023.
Early pressure came from $463 million in outflows from U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs, a failed Senate vote on the CLARITY Act and the Fed’s first rate hike since 2023, which lifted the target range to 3.75–4%. Bitcoin briefly slipped below $75,000.
The second half brought a sharp reversal. A single week saw $3.4 billion flow into crypto ETFs, pushing Bitcoin above $85,000 and Ether past $2,700. Liquidations reached $746 million, mostly shorts. By month-end Bitcoin hovered near $84,170 and Ether near $2,717.
